To Vaccinate or Not To Vaccinate

By Patricia A. Cooper, DVM

That is the question that has been put to pet owners and veterinarians. Several years ago, the State of Texas staged open discussions in communities to consider the issue of vaccines in companion animals. There were heated debates as both sides voiced their opinions.  In the end, the State of Texas actually approved 3 year boosters for the Rabies vaccination. (which, by the way, is the only vaccination required by law)

Among the issues that I consider important are---

1.        Are dogs and cats being over-vaccinated? Too many at one time? Too often?

2.       Are vaccines harmful or helpful to their health?

3.       Is the occurrence of cancer and immune related diseases linked to vaccines?

4.       Do the standard vaccine protocols need to be modified?

The label enclosed with each vaccine states “intended for immunization of healthy animals.” If an animal is battling another disease, I feel it is dangerous to introduce vaccines at that time. There is a continued debate over the fact that vaccines can actually bring on immune deficient diseases. Already, there is proof that cancer can invade the injection site. The incidence of these cases may be extremely small. But not to those who have been inflicted.

As an alternative to annual vaccines, a blood sample can be taken to determine if a pet has developed antibodies to the level that provides protection. This is called a titer test. These results can reveal which vaccines are needed.

Another point of consideration is the amount of exposure that an animal has to others that may be harboring disease. Each case must be evaluated according to individual need. I always say “evaluate before you vaccinate.”

I feel that each pet owner should be informed about benefits and risks of vaccines before deciding the best course of action.  Good health is always the best protection against disease.  High quality diet, plenty of exercise, and living in a stress free environment are the components of maintaining a healthy, happy companion.

Enjoy every day with your pet!

SANDY NEEDS TO BE LOVED!!!!

spacer (1K)

Our current foster dog is a cutie.  She is about 4 years old, and weighs around 35lbs.  It took her about 2 weeks, but her social butterfly personality has flourished.  She gets bouncy on occassion, but likes just to cuddle next to you, or flop around on her back for a belly rub.  She has been deprived of attention most of her life, so she begs to be loved.  She is potty trained and spayed, and our trainer has been working with her on her basic commands.  Overall, she is healthy, but she is heartworm positive undergoing the "Soft Treatment" and her teeth have been damaged or many of them missing due to excessive chewing from a few year flea infestation when she was left outside to live in a backyard.  If you know anyone interested in meeting Sandy, have them e-mail or call to set up a visit.  Her adorable picture is posted on our website.  The first two people to reply that they read about Sandy will receive a free holiday Scrunchie.   http://www.mutthouse.com/adoptees.html

Kitties that Need Homes

One of our Employees has been fostering 4 kittens. They are now 7 months old, and just got spayed and have had all their shots.  There are 3 little boys and 1 little girl.  We are attemping to keep them in a cage up front for you to visit them.  They have not spent much time around dogs, but with a little patience, I know they could get use to a dog family.  We are just asking the adopting parents to re-imburse Deborah for their spay and shots which was done at a low cost facility:  SNAP.
